Our Head of Technology

Miguel Babasa

Joined The Ortus Club on the 4th of January, 2021

Mickey joined The Ortus Club in 2019, with what began as a one-off project that has quickly turned into an exciting journey of growth and innovation. His passion for learning and building systems that scale propelled him through the different roles in the team, from supporting events to eventually leading the company’s tech evolution.

Now, as Head of Technology, Mickey drives long-term impact and a mindset rooted in continuous improvement; he ensures the team stays ahead of the curve, one solution at a time.

Tell us about yourself, your role, and how you started with The Ortus Club.
I’m the current Head of Technology at The Ortus Club, a role I’ve held since early 2022. I first joined the company in late 2019, back when the team was just 12 people. At the time, an influx of new projects came in, and they needed someone to work on an event in Toronto. I jumped in, did my best, and from there, one project led to another. It’s been a great journey of growth ever since.

What’s the most challenging part of your role, and how do you overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge is also one of the most rewarding aspects: there’s always something new to learn. Whether it’s a new tool, system, or platform, each challenge demands a fresh approach. I overcome this by staying curious and flexible, and by collaborating closely with others. Sharing ideas and learning as a team makes even the steepest learning curves manageable.

What’s one achievement you are particularly proud of?
I’m especially proud of the complete redesign and revamp of our company website. It not only exceeded my expectations in terms of design and performance, but the process itself was incredibly fulfilling. Working alongside different teams, having weekly discussions, and building something collaboratively made it one of the most enjoyable and rewarding projects I’ve worked on.

What makes you the best at what you do? What values drive you to perform even better?
I resonate most with our value “We Think Big.” As a natural overthinker, I tend to go deep into each implementation: evaluating long-term impacts and how we can apply new processes and technologies most effectively. I’m driven by the desire to build things that don’t just work today, but will keep working as we scale. That mindset pushes me to continually improve.

Which initiative are you most excited about that you have planned for your department?
We’re currently focused on further improving the website, not just in terms of aesthetics, but functionality and performance, using real data. Last year, we refreshed the site’s look to align with our new brand identity, but moving forward, we’re prioritising user behaviour and testing to guide the next round of updates. I’m excited to see how data-driven decisions can push us even further.

From your experience, why do clients choose to partner with The Ortus Club?
Clients choose to partner with The Ortus Club because we offer something truly unique. We bring together the right people around the right topics in carefully curated, intimate settings. Every detail, from the guest list to the conversation to the food and drink, is thoughtfully designed to create an experience that no other company can replicate. It’s this combination of precision, personalisation, and quality that sets us apart.

What do you think the future holds for The Ortus Club? What role will you play towards it?
It’s always exciting to think about the future of The Ortus Club, there’s always something new in the works. The company has never really stood still; we’re constantly exploring new ideas, experimenting with better ways to connect people, and pushing the boundaries of what we can offer. I see us growing not just in scale, but in the quality and sophistication of our experiences. As Head of Technology, my role is to make sure our systems, platforms, and tools grow with us—or ideally, ahead of us.

When you’re not at work, how do you spend your time?

I almost always spend my free time surrounding myself with the people I love and doing things I enjoy the most: video games, time with my significant other, and hanging out online with friends.
