Executive Summary: Key Takeaways

  • The Simplicity Mandate: In an era of decision fatigue, the most effective marketing strategies are those that strip away complexity in favour of clear, actionable audience insights.
  • The Experiential Premium: Human-centric, live experiences have become the ultimate differentiator for building brand recall and trust.
  • Revenue Alignment: Marketing must move beyond lead generation to inhabit the revenue conversation, influencing the entire lifecycle from acquisition to advocacy.
  • Agility Over Rigid Planning: The traditional advice to “stick to the plan” is obsolete. Modern leaders must be responsive to real-time geopolitical and regulatory shifts.

Sreetama Ray advocates for a radical return to fundamentals. With a career trajectory that spans television journalism at CNN to high-level consultancy at McKinsey and KPMG, Ray understands that while the tools of marketing have changed, the human need for trust has not. Currently leading global communications for Aon’s risk capital business, she highlights a critical shift: the longer the sales cycle, the more important the human touch becomes.

For Ray, executive roundtables aren’t networking events. They are strategic working sessions where leaders co-create the agenda, pressure-test ideas, and discuss real business challenges with peers. These conversations help ensure marketing remains a trusted advisor rather than just a service provider.

How has a background in journalism and consulting shaped your view of marketing?

Ray reflects on 20 years of storytelling and strategy, noting that clarity is the most valuable asset in a professional services environment.

“My career began as a television journalist for CNN in New Delhi. Since then, I’ve had stints with professional services firms like McKinsey & Company and KPMG. For the past five years, I’ve been with Aon. In my experience, there’s a constant chase for trends and added complexity, which often leads to decision fatigue. The top priority now should be simplicity in marketing strategy. It doesn’t have to be flashy. It just has to work.”

Why are human experiences, including live executive discussions, becoming the most innovative tool in a digital-led era?

Sreetama discusses why brands that prioritise co-creation and physical engagement stand out in a saturated market.

“In this digital-led marketing era, creating human experiences has almost become innovative. Brands that stand out connect to customer pain points and co-create with clients, beyond digital. For example, we hosted an event where attendees voted on the agenda live using magnets. It was an interactive, live experience shaped by the clients, not us. Creativity and empathy show clients we understand them and can solve their problems. Whether B2B or B2C, we’re all still dealing with people.”

What are the primary challenges for marketing teams?

From content saturation to the difficulty of attribution, Ray highlights the shifting landscape of lead conversion.

“Buying cycles have become longer and more complex, involving multiple stakeholders. Marketers need content that resonates with diverse roles and must nurture leads over time without losing momentum. Then there’s content saturation; gated content or cold outreach doesn’t convert the way it used to. We’ve shifted to ungated content, community-led growth, and intent-based targeting. Proving ROI and attribution remains a persistent challenge in long B2B sales cycles.”

How can leaders leverage AI and personalisation to architect growth?

Ray explores the shift from basic personalisation to end-to-end lifecycle influence across the entire funnel.

“Previously, adding someone’s name in an email felt like personalisation. Now, we can dynamically tailor content to industries, roles, and accounts across channels. AI helps with creativity and efficiency, allowing for faster go-to-market. Marketing used to stop at lead generation. Now we can influence retention, expansion, advocacy, all through lifecycle marketing. We can architect growth across the funnel, which simply wasn’t possible before.”

Why is shareability the defining trait of a modern marketing leader?

A leader’s success is measured by the quality of the experience they create at every touchpoint.

“If I had to choose one word, it would be: ‘Shareability.’ As marketers, we create many touchpoints, content, events, media, social. Whichever one someone interacts with, they should walk away with a positive experience they want to share. A successful marketing leader ensures every touchpoint builds trust, relevance, and recall, so that when a client needs help, your brand is top of mind as a trusted advisor.”

Sreetama Ray’s insights remind us that even in a hyper-digital world, the most successful strategies are built on human-to-human interaction. Her example of clients co-creating an agenda live is the perfect microcosm of what we do at The Ortus Club. When you step away from the digital noise and into a room of your peers, you aren’t just attending an event. You are building trust and recall that Ray identifies as essential for modern B2B growth.

Our executive roundtables and knowledge-sharing discussions are designed as small, peer-led discussions where senior leaders exchange real-world insights, compare strategies, and explore solutions to shared business challenges. For leaders navigating increasingly complex marketing environments, these discussions provide a rare opportunity to step away from the noise and learn directly from peers facing similar strategic challenges.
