Ortus at 10: What a Decade of Executive Events Has Taught Us

Author: The Ortus Club Date: June 2025

This year marks a special milestone for us at Ortus: we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary. Reflecting on this journey, it’s clear the last decade has completely rewritten the playbook for executive engagement. From large-scale conventions to targeted, intimate dialogues, we’ve seen firsthand how dramatically the world of C-level interactions has evolved.

Here’s what ten years of executive events have taught us, and why the next decade looks even more exciting.

Event Format: From Big Conferences to Curated Conversations

Ten years ago, executive events were mostly large-scale conferences. Think big venues, hundreds of attendees, and plenty of handshakes. Networking happened in crowded halls, and bigger was often considered better. Keynotes dominated agendas, and executives often struggled to find genuine opportunities to connect amidst the noise and crowd.

Fast forward to today, and the shift couldn’t be more pronounced. Now, the preference among executives and decision-makers is for smaller, intimate roundtables where conversations are not only curated but deeply meaningful. Hybrid and virtual-first models have also become standard post-2020, adding layers of flexibility previously unimaginable.

Why the shift? Simply put, time and attention are more valuable than ever. Executives want depth, relevance, and direct connections, exactly what executive events like roundtables deliver. At Ortus, we’ve adapted rapidly, pioneering this smaller format to ensure executives can engage authentically and strategically. Our roundtables now intentionally limit participants to ensure every attendee contributes meaningfully and takes away tangible insights.

Job Titles: Reflecting Strategic Shifts

Another noticeable evolution is seen clearly in executive job titles. A decade ago, titles such as Marketing Director, IT Manager, or Operations Lead were common at executive tables. These roles often functioned within clearly defined boundaries, focusing on specific departmental objectives.

Today, these titles have evolved significantly into more strategic, cross-functional roles, think VP of Growth, Chief Experience Officer, or Head of Digital Transformation. This change reflects a deeper shift: roles have become increasingly strategic and integrated across departments. Marketing leaders aren’t just marketers—they’re strategic growth drivers. IT leaders aren’t just tech experts, they’re integral to innovation, security, and broader business strategy.

Discussion Topics: From Cloud to AI and Sustainability

The topics on executives’ minds have also evolved drastically. A decade ago, conversations frequently revolved around cloud computing, mobile strategies, and the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) movement. While these topics remain relevant, the focus has expanded dramatically.

Fast forward to today, and the executive dialogue is dominated by AI, responsible technology, customer experience (CX), and sustainability. Executives no longer discuss technology merely as tools but as strategic enablers driving significant business transformation. These contemporary topics reflect broader societal and technological changes. Executives today grapple with complex questions around ethical tech adoption, sustainability mandates, and immersive customer experiences.

Ortus stays ahead of these conversations, ensuring our roundtables provide not just discussion, but genuine thought leadership. Our moderators and speakers are carefully chosen for their ability to bring actionable insights, enabling executives to confidently navigate today’s complex business landscape.

Outreach Methods: From Mass Emails to Strategic Personalisation

How we reach executives has also transformed significantly. Ten years ago, simple cold email campaigns and generic invitations were the norm. Executives often received countless impersonal invitations, making it challenging to distinguish meaningful opportunities.

Today, Ortus and other industry leaders leverage targeted Account-Based Marketing (ABM) strategies, LinkedIn Sales Navigator for precision targeting, and personalised video outreach to engage executives more authentically. These methods aren’t just more efficient—they’re far more effective. Personalisation signals respect for the executive’s time and priorities. By taking the time to understand individual executives’ challenges and interests, Ortus ensures each invitation genuinely resonates.

Success Metrics: Quality Over Quantity

Measuring the success of executive events has seen perhaps one of the most dramatic shifts. In the past, attendee numbers alone often defined success. A packed conference hall was proof enough of a job well done.

Today, quantity is secondary to quality. At Ortus, we look at engagement depth—are executives actively participating? Are they following up with meaningful business connections afterwards? We measure pipeline influence and executive feedback rather than headcount alone. This shift ensures each interaction at an Ortus event is meaningful, strategic, and aligned with business goals. By focusing on quality, we’ve built enduring relationships and delivered measurable value for executives and organisations alike.

Role of Moderation: From Presentation to Conversation

Lastly, moderation itself has evolved. Ten years ago, events typically featured keynote speeches and panel discussions, essentially one-way conversations. Moderators often functioned merely as facilitators of scripted content.

Today, moderation focuses on facilitating genuine dialogue. Peer-led conversations, guided roundtables, and executive intimacy have become the gold standard. At Ortus, our moderators are conversation architects. They guide discussions strategically, ensuring every executive’s voice is heard and valued. Moderators skilfully steer discussions towards actionable insights, fostering real-time problem-solving and knowledge exchange.

This style of moderation doesn’t just enrich the conversation, it deepens connections, driving lasting business relationships.

The Ortus Difference: Then, Now, and Tomorrow

Reflecting on our first decade, one truth is clear: while the methods and formats of executive engagement have evolved, the fundamental goal remains unchanged—to foster meaningful business conversations. Ortus has embraced every shift, adapting proactively to ensure we deliver the most impactful executive experiences possible.

Looking ahead, we’re excited for another decade of innovation. Trends such as predictive analytics, immersive technology, and further personalisation will define the future. Ortus remains committed to shaping meaningful dialogue, bringing the right executives together, and constantly redefining what it means to truly connect at the highest level.

Ortus at 10 isn’t just a milestone—it’s the foundation of our continued commitment to leading the future of executive events.
