Sustainable commerce growth: Opportunities and challenges in an ‘endemic’ world

Global eCommerce adoption surged by nearly 28% (1) in 2020, spurred by lockdown measures and people turning to online retail for necessities and entertainment. (2) The pandemic has dramatically changed the way we consume and live, which is not likely to stop. The openings are likely to unleash all ‘on-hold’ buying desires and have a long-lasting effect on consumer spending.

But this explosion comes at a hefty price for retailers, who have to recalibrate their strategies to meet new demands, stand out in a competitive landscape, and sustain growth in an ‘endemic’ world. Innovation and attention to detail can significantly impact revenue, brand reputation, and loyalty, but the reality is that not all growth is the same. It requires consistent strategy design and execution, way beyond eCommerce roles — an integrated, coordinated organisation-wide effort.

  • How have consumer demands changed? How can leaders engage customers consistently online and offline, keeping them close and loyal to their brand without damaging margins?
  • What growth opportunities lie in cross-border expansion, in regions like southern Europe and Latin America? What about in mature markets?
  • What supply chain challenges do organisations face in driving profitability? What should their key considerations be towards sustainable growth?
