The Future of AI Investments: Preparing for the Evolving Landscape of ROI and Revenue Growth

With Gen AI in the picture, there has never been more of a shareholder expectation to invest in AI. However, with limited experience internally and lots of external noise structure is needed to implement and prioritise AI use cases with scarce data science resources. They must bring real-world benefits with a quantifiable return on investment (ROI) for the business. However, realising an optimal return on AI investments entails navigating various resourcing challenges and technical intricacies.

Only time will tell whether the long-term outlook on ROI will improve. According to Gartner®, ‘By 2028, more than 50% of enterprises that have built large AI models from scratch will abandon their efforts due to costs, complexity, and technical debt in their deployments.’ This could potentially be a sign that deriving ROI and clear revenue growth from Generative AI could prove difficult. The question for leaders now is clear: what can be done to bolster the ROI and deployment of AI systems and initiatives?

  • What are the primary obstacles businesses face in identifying, quantifying and optimising the return on investment from AI initiatives, especially when considering factors like cost, complexity, risk and reward?
  • Given the significant investments required for AI projects, what strategies can organisations employ to manage costs and mitigate risks while maximising the potential for tangible business impacts and ROI?
  • How might the future landscape of AI investments and ROI evolve in the coming years? What steps can leaders take now to prepare for scaling usage whilst retaining clear revenue growth from generative AI models?
