The state of cybersecurity in Malaysia: Industrial 4.0 and operational technology

Industry 4.0 is a vision, and its goal is to enable autonomous decision-making processes, raising operational excellence to the next level. Operational technology (OT) assets and systems have to get more connected to support data-driven decision-making, optimising production and operations. This helps organisations not just to survive but to thrive globally in the new normal.

Traditionally, OT networks depended on air gaps to protect industrial control systems (ICS) from cyber-attacks. As more OT assets are getting connected to the outside world to support growth initiatives, the resulting diminishing air gap has significantly increased the level of risk. With the increased IT/OT network convergence, organisations have to rethink their approach to OT security to build a more cyber-resilient operation.

  • How do organisations define their Industrial 4.0 strategies? What are the changes in priorities before and after COVID-19?
  • What are the various security considerations when outlining plans for Industrial 4.0?
  • How do organisations streamline their processes and team to cover OT security when security was predominately focused only on the IT network previously?
