How do you typically prepare to moderate an Ortus event?
I always enjoy meeting the event sponsors as I get a better idea of what they’re eager to hear from the attendees. The moderating guide typically has 3 core questions that I use to build a framework of supporting questions to keep the conversation going. I’ll often have prompt examples to prod the discussion if someone doesn’t want to be the first to speak up, which tends to really get folks in the flow.

What tips and tricks would you recommend for those aspiring to become moderators?

I like to run the sponsors through my sub-questions and ask if there are any specific attendees from whom they’re eager to hear answers. We often have a lot of attendees with unique experiences and perspectives, so it’s great to be informed and drive the conversation.

Could you share some memorable moments from your moderating experiences?

Each event has been memorable as I walked away with new relationships with executives in my region. I’ve had the pleasure to meet brilliant folks across industries I hadn’t been as familiar with previously, and I’ve had many attendees reach out after the event regarding areas of expertise I have. It’s a low-pressure environment because no one is there to sell, simply enjoy the great conversation and a meal with new acquaintances.

In what ways has moderating contributed to your growth as a leader in your field?
It has given me an opportunity to learn from experts across engineering, marketing, and product development while contributing my background in workshop facilitation. I’ve been able to expand my regional network with other leaders across industries and learn from them as thought leaders.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of moderating?

Much of my time is spent working as a Senior Manager of Strategy & Transformation at Armanino, but outside of work, I enjoy going on adventures with my wife, son, and dogs. I also get fulfillment from being a mentor for other military veterans who own or run small businesses.

What advice would you offer to aspiring moderators?

Have fun! Prepare by building on your moderation guide, but don’t be afraid to adapt and let the conversation flow.
