What do you find most exciting about moderating?
What I liked most about moderating was the dynamic exchange of ideas. Engaging with professionals from diverse industries on a cutting-edge topic like Generative AI allowed me to facilitate meaningful conversations, explore innovative perspectives, and learn from the collective expertise of the participants. The energy and insights that emerged from these discussions were incredibly inspiring and fulfilling.
How do you typically prepare to moderate an Ortus event?
To prepare for moderating an Ortus event, I begin by thoroughly researching the discussion topic. For example, if the event is about Generative AI, I delve into its key aspects, exploring current trends and potential future impacts to ensure a solid understanding.
Next, I try to get an understanding of who the event audience is by reviewing their backgrounds and interests to tailor the discussion effectively and make sure the discussion is highly relevant to them. I then plan the key points and outline the main topics and questions I want to cover.
I also try to connect and engage with the hosts beforehand to align on key points and strategise a cohesive conversation for everyone. On the day itself, I try to remain flexible and ready to adapt the discussion flow as needed for a natural and engaging experience, while still guiding it toward the intended outcomes.

Moderation has significantly contributed to my growth as a leader in several ways. It has enhanced my communication skills and built empathy by engaging with diverse perspectives. What tips and tricks would you recommend for those aspiring to become moderators?
First off, dive deep into your topic. Don’t just skim the surface; really get to know it. That way, you’ll feel confident and can keep the conversation flowing naturally. Then, get to know your audience. What are they interested in? What’s their background? Tailoring your approach makes a huge difference.
Before the event, map out your key points and questions, but don’t over-script it. You want it to feel like a real conversation, not a lecture. Definitely connect with your speakers beforehand; it’s a great way to align and build some rapport. When you’re actually moderating, be ready to go with the flow.
Things rarely go exactly as planned, so flexibility is key. Listen actively to what people are saying, and encourage everyone to jump in. And, of course, keep an eye on the clock. You want to make sure you cover everything and end on time. Basically, it’s about being prepared, being present, and making sure everyone feels heard.
