How do you typically prepare to moderate an Ortus event?
Research the subject area to make sure it is current and well-informed. Equally, research the guests and attempt to get context on their perspectives, focus and conceivably challenges. Then disseminate that into “a point of view.”
What tips and tricks would you recommend for those aspiring to become moderators?
Fundamentally, business is predictable, technology is challenging, but people are the most interesting. Businesses and technology are built by people. People with passion, commitment, and aspirations. When you can unlock that potential, then it gets interesting. A moderator is there to provoke, challenge and ultimately encourage debate. To give ‘air’ to a debate.
Could you share some memorable moments from your moderating experiences?
There isn’t one specific moment, more a sense in being trusted to facilitate conversation from people who can be reticent, and others who might wish to dominate. Managing both at the same time is like a chess game, keep your senses alert and focused, and have fun.
In what ways has moderating contributed to your growth as a leader in your field?
Opinions generally gestate from conversation and discussion. Getting smart people, around a table, and stimulating debate is all about stretching your personal skills and intellect. And, learning something new.
What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of moderating?
Building and nurturing innovative technology businesses globally.
What advice would you offer to aspiring moderators?
Be brave, provocative, self-deprecating, and all at the same time.
